Mobile phone applications Need Privacy Improvements, Study Finds

Based on a new study, mobile apps do a poor job of explaining their privacy policies.

In May, members of the Global Privacy Enforcement Network conducted a privacy sweep to analyze the privacy meizi evolution disclosures of mobile phone applications. Twenty-six privacy regulators from around the world examined 1,211 mobile phone applications and located that "a large number of apps are accessing large amounts of private information without adequately explaining how people's information is being used."

Specifically, the group discovered that 83 percent from the apps failed to clearly let you know that they were collecting, using, and disclosing personal information. More than half of the apps managed to get a challenge to locate even basic privacy information, the GPEN said, and almost one out of three apps seemed to request access to more information than was needed.

Forty-three percent from the apps studied did not alter their privacy communications to suit a little, mobile screen, forcing consumers to scroll or click through multiple pages to see the policy.

The study wasn't all bad news.

Some of the apps provided a basic reason behind how private information would be used and provided links to more in depth information, GPEN said. And, just as impressive was the use of just-in-time notifications by some apps informing users about the potential collection or utilization of private data because it involved to happen.

Why it matters: While some positive findings were noted, among the researchers emphasized that there was "clear room for improvement" for apps to describe how consumer details are used. Matchmaker for patients and services lands cash from TreeHouse

A startup aiming to match patients with helpful information on improving their own health has landed $100,000 from TreeHouse Health, a health care innovation center.

At the press conference, Chris laughed about having the kidney of his rival - the Ravens - saying, "Everyone jokes about me having a Ravens' kidney. But, hey, I'm able to live with that."

To prepare for the surgery, both Ma'ake and Chris needed to slim down - they both weighed in at over 350 pounds before beginning the procedure - and, during their weight-loss period, Chris had to undergo dialysis. 'If someone is grossly overweight, if they are within the obese range--85 to 90 kilograms to have an average size woman and 95 to 100 kilograms to have an average size man--then the advice to shed weight is nice advice. But when they are really in the overweight range, with a BMI somewhere between 25 and 30, i quickly think the public policy message ought to be to live a healthy lifestyle, do the kind of things we have been telling people to do for the last 100 years; eat vegetables and fruits, whole-grains, get enough sleep, try to reduce stress, obtain a bit of exercise. There's lots of collateral damage in telling people to lose weight, and that we know that people are often not so successful at slimming down and it doesn't really make much impact on their health outcomes in that middle range.'

The most common measurement accustomed to categorise people as 'underweight' or 'overweight' or 'obese' is the bmi. This is your weight in kilograms divided through the square of the height in metres. The BMI, however, is usually criticised like a fairly crude measure.

'It doesn't look at the body fat distribution,' says Professor Olds. 'We know you will find strong associations between the distribution of excess fat and also the risk of coronary disease and diabetes and the like. It's more dangerous to put on fat around your middle than around your thighs and hips, and even though lots of women can't stand it, that it is protective to possess fat around your thighs and hips.'

The BMI also doesn't take account of muscle mass, or lack thereof. Many professional athletes could be considered obese or overweight, although some ladies have high amounts of excess fat but are considered underweight due to their lack of muscle tissue.

Moreover, individuals are terrible at estimating their own weight category. Based on Professor Olds, they more often than not underestimate the weight range that they fall.
