How you can Help Your Parents Eat Healthy and workout More

Michael Dempsey? was in Del Taco mode. He would drive to fast-food chains every single day for lunch and dinner.

The 62-year-old had hypertension and was beginning to show indications of pre-diabetes, but the last thing he thought about was his diet. But then, eventually it clicked. Rose posted a relevant video on her behalf website describing the quantity of salt in processed food, and Dempsey saw it. He was fed up with feeling depressed and realized something - perhaps his sodium intake - needed to change. During a phone call a few weeks later, Rose couldn't believe the words appearing out of her dad's mouth: "There's salt within the processed food," he said. "So I just stopped eating it." Instead, he soon started cooking vegetable stir-fries with a side of fish every evening for dinner.

In 2 weeks he lost 20 pounds. Over the next couple of months he dropped another 20. Three years later, he's right down to 180 pounds, and hasn't gone near a drive-thru. The best part is, his depression has dissipated. "He really wants to live again," Rose says. "He has more friends than he's had since I've known him. He's a girlfriend he's totally in love with, and he's happy about life."

Rose's experience with her father's weight and diet may seem familiar, considering about 2 in 3 Americans are obese or overweight.
